What foam to buy...

You will find that the styrofoam shapes and floral products in craft stores are very  porous, light weight and can be expensive.  They are fine for a small project.  For that larger project, purchase a 4'x8' board of  insulation at your local Home Depot or Loews store.   It is dense foam that holds up well.  You may chose from several thicknesses.  Ask the store service department to cut the 4x8 into smaller strips to fit in your car.    If you need thickness, join and glue pieces together, using toothpicks for strength.
